You’ve spent hours on your website, read countless articles, pursued Pinterest for hours getting inspired and making sure it looks just right before making it live. But people aren’t knocking down your digital door to come work with you. Your website is just there and not really helping move the needle in your business. If this sounds like you then you may be making some common website mistakes that are costing you potential clients and email subscribers.

Let’s dive right into the top 3 common mistakes I see people making when it comes to their website.

1. Communicate your value proposition clearly

According to a study done by Chao Liu and colleagues,  we know that people spend less than a minute on a website before they click off.

Wow. The million dollar question is how do we increase the time that someone is on our website?

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “value proposition” but essentially your value proposition is the reason why your dream clients should work with you as opposed to someone else. Or in other words- what specifically do you bring to the table?

You may know this internally and understand how to communicate that throughout your marketing, but are you doing that clearly on your website?

By clearly communicating our value proposition within the first 8 seconds someone is on our website we can keep them on there for minutes as opposed to seconds.

Here are a couple questions to ask yourself to know if you’re doing this well on your own site

  • Can a visitor clearly determine how your website applies to their life and/or business?

  • Are they able to understand what they will get in exchange for sticking around--for instance information about website building, finances, mindset, etc.

If a user has no idea what your website is all about or what area of their life or business you can help them improve they have no reason to stick around on your website. People don’t go digging around to find out that information. They expect it to be readily available to them when they hop on your site so make sure you’re providing that for them.

2. Too much, too soon

Ok, what do I mean by this? In our quest to make sure people know how to get in touch, work with us, read the blog, see our gallery, and on and on we overwhelm them with info on the very first page.

This is detrimental to the user experience and can lead to having too much text and confusing copy. All of which cause visitors to leave your website and not stick around.

It is so easy to want to make sure we give people all of the right information and make sure they know how to get in touch and do #allofthethings on our websites, but that comes from a place of desperation and not confidence. When we have confidence in our unique selling proposition (or value proposition) and our message and brand we are more likely to have a website that flows better and not one that needs to tell a visitor everything on page one.

Think of your website like a house. When someone comes over, you don’t greet them by saying,

“Hey there, welcome! Ok so here is the closet for your jacket and shoes. You can grab food over in the kitchen which is down the hall and to the right. Or you can hang out in the living room where we have some snacks out and everyone is just hanging out. Also if you’re needing the bathroom that is right over here on the left. If it’s already occupied you can head up the stairs and there is another bathroom right at the top.”   

Imagine how overwhelming that would be for your guests!? What we normally do is give them the next right steps.

  • Jacket here.

  • Living room full of friends right over here.

  • Then once they’ve done that we direct them to the food.

  • If they ask for the bathroom we give them that info.

Your website needs to do the same thing. Think of the home page as the main first step in getting to know your audience. Let them know what the right next step is. If they decide to go to the next page then you direct them to the next one and so on and so forth.

When you can do that effectively you train them to keep taking the next step in your brand when you ask. These are the people who will become regular visitors of your website and then eventual clients.


3. Not using Google Analytics

The last but not least common website mistake is not installing Google Analytics on your website. Your website is a marketing tool like Instagram or Facebook. It is not something that is a one and done thing.

As you study it and learn what is working and isn’t working, you can make improvements and adjustments so that you can increase your conversions. The times my clients and I have seen the most results is when we studied the website to see how it was working and then adjusted it based on the visitors.

That is why I have been able to help my clients see an average 150% increase in traffic within their first two weeks of launching. The reason for that?

We use Google Analytics! It gives us so much valuable information in terms of how people are using the website, where they are going, how they are navigating everything.

When you are able to see all of that information, you can either continue doing those things or stop doing them depending on whether they are helping or hurting your website.

What to track once you have it set up? Here are the top two things I suggest until you get more comfortable with doing this regularly.


Audience Overview:

This will give you information on things like how many people are visiting your website, how long they stick around, and how many pages they view before leaving.

You want to make sure that you get really comfortable with these numbers and understanding what they mean for your business.

Acquisition Overview:

This section will tell you where people are coming from so that you can better leverage the sources that are driving the most traffic.

You’ll also be able to click through each traffic referral source and see all the nitty-gritty details. For instance, if you clicked through on social media you’d see the following data:

This is showing that this person’s largest traffic driver is Facebook. What does this mean? This means that they should optimize their Facebook profile and make sure that they are doing a good job of marketing effectively on that platform.

Crafting a website that converts take time and effort and lots of testing and tweaking, friend. It doesn’t happen overnight.  Take some time out today to check for these common website mistakes so that you can start getting your website on track to be your 24/7 sales person that gets you results because it truly can.
